Teatro trains light on crime in ‘Women of Juarez’

Back with an all-new cast and director, local theater company Teatro Bravo is staging the return of its most successful production, The Women of Juarez.

Based on true crimes, Women of Juarez follows the story of a mother in search of her missing daughter in that border city, where hundreds of women have disappeared or been murdered in the past decade.

ASU theater professor Pam Sterling will direct the English-language production.

The stage work is written by Ruben Amavizca and has been presented for the last four years in the Frida Kahlo Theater in Los Angeles. Teatro Bravo produced the play in Spanish in 2005, winning an AriZoni award for best actress (Margarita Villa) and best director (Christina Marin).

The Women of Juarez is being staged at John Paul Theater, Phoenix College, 1202 W. Thomas Road. Tickets: $15 general; $12 seniors and students; $11 for groups of eight or more. Opening night is Sept. 1; other dates include Sept. 7 – 8, 14 – 15, and 16. Show time is 8 p.m., except for a 2 p.m. matinee Sept. 16.
