New hotline can head off foreclosure

Arizona homeowners seeking free mortgage foreclosure counseling can call the Arizona Foreclosure Prevention Hotline. The service is funded by the federal government and administered through Community Information & Referral, a nonprofit call center headed by Roberto Armijo, president/CEO. The Arizona Department of Housing chose the call center to administer the hotline. Armijo says the line is averaging 50 phone calls a day.  He adds that number will rise as word gets out about the service. During the call, basic information is taken, and if needed, callers are then transferred to one of 13 state-approved mortgage-counseling services. The services offer advice and even negotiate lower payments with lenders. The hotline will continue for at least six months, and could be extended due to Arizona’s high foreclosure rate. The hotline number is 877-448-1211.
