Mexican-American female head judge – first for County

Judge Maria Lilia Felix was recently elected Pima County’s first female Mexican-American presiding judge. The election came after Presiding Judge James P. Angiulo had to retire due to illness in March. Felix, who is running for re-election as justice of the peace this fall, said the court faces many challenges, such as growing caseloads due to increased photo traffic enforcement and keeping up with rapidly expanding technology. When a new justice of the peace precinct was created in 2004, Felix was practicing criminal defense and domestic relations law at her own firm. After four years as justice of the peace, Felix said the job suits her. “I just love the interaction with the people,” she says.
