UA, 'Times' to school journalism students.
Arizona, long considered a cow town in Latino media circles, may be evolving into a Latino J-school capital.
Arizona, long considered a cow town in Latino media circles, may be evolving into a Latino J-school capital.
The latest link in the state’s growing focus on Latino journalism is the June announcement that The New York Times and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) are launching an intensive training program for Latino student journalists that will be hosted in alternate years by the University of Arizona department of journalism.
The Hispanic Student Journalism Institute will begin at the UA in January 2008.
One in eight students in the UA journalism department is Hispanic.
The announcement follows the Latino journalism initiatives launched in 2005-06 at Arizona State University Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Phoenix TV station KNXV-TV, Channel 15. ASU is partnering with NAHJ to train Latino journalism students and non-Latinos wanting to cover Latino issues. KNXV aims to increase Latinos on its staff.
