Marilyn Zeitlin

Immersed for years in the art world, Marilyn Zeitlin recently announced her retirement as director and curator of the ASU Art Museum, where she was known for having an international feel as well as showcasing local emerging artists, many of whom are Latino.

First art work you fell in love with?

My grandfather made a copy of Rembrandt’s Noble Slav. It hung over his mantel and I was fascinated that blobs and smears of color, seen from a distance mysteriously became a recognizable image. I experimented to try to see exactly at what point the transformation occurred.

If you had a chance to pose for an artist, who would it be?

I dread being photographed. Maybe if Goya could come back, I’d sit for him and risk his satirical insight.

Best music to hear while viewing art?

Depends on what the art is, but I’ve known artists who use music to paint or work by, and I often imagine what it might have been when I look at the work. I’ll listen to Brazilian or Cuban music almost any time, (or) pop or classical.

Favorite Latino artists.

This could go on for pages. Contemporary artists from Cuba: Toirac, Manzo (he lives in Phoenix now!) Abel Barroso, Sandra Ramos.  From Brazil, Jarbas Lopes, Tiago Carneiro da Cunha, Adriana Varejao, Oscar Oiwa.
