The Tempe Public library presents 'Chairs,' a look at the utilitarian piece of furniture

Next time you go to the Tempe Public library, check out Chairs, a wide-ranging look at this utilitarian piece of furniture. Artists from across the Valley, including Manny Burruel, Ralph Cordova and Marco Albarrán, were asked to present works about chairs using their preferred formats. The results: some are fun to look at, others are decorated with extravagant materials while others are made from found objects.

Cordova's piece references Geronimo, the fierce Apache chief. "His life is a cautionary tale to the belief in an unchanging cultural reality," Cordova writes. "I offer a seat to an alternative universe to speak and relay his warning."

Chairs runs through March 3 at the Tempe Public Library Program Room, lower level, 3500 S. Rural Road.
