When Cio-Cio San sings Un Bel Di Vedremo in the opera Madama Butterfly, there will likely be tears welling among the audience in Phoenix Symphony Hall.

But tenor Jose Luis Duval has reason to be more upbeat as he assumes the part of Pinkerton in the Arizona Opera production later this month. Duval performs for a sold-out house Jan. 28 for this bittersweet story of a delicate, doomed Japanese girl who weds an American naval lieutenant.
