TAKING ISSUE

What is the issue here? Is it the fact that a non-Latino, (Russell) Pearce, was out of line in saying something that needed to be said? Or is it the fact that he said something that the Hispanic community does not want to hear, nor do they want to address that issue?

There is certainly an issue with (undocumented immigrants) and it does not matter who brings it to the surface; the problem is evident. Hiding under our Mexicanism and closing our eyes is not going to resolve anything.

While I totally support all Latino efforts, I also can support Pearce in that he is saying to send the (undocumented) back. I have had conversations with several Mexicans (from Mexico) who have no desire to help our Latino cause/movement for improvement and recognition. They say they are here for the money that they can earn and send "a sus casas" in Mexico.

I personally questioned several Mexicans (in) a self-conducted poll and asked if a permanent status or citizenship was offered, would they accept that status? Amazingly, all of them declined the offer and were all consistent in the fact that they have no interest to be "Americanos"...

With that attitude it is no wonder that so many see all "Latinos" as Mexican moochers of the American system. (This is) a sad situation, since those most visible end up representing us negatively and leave the public with the wrong impression.

There is more depth to the Mexican-American than the "wetback perspective" that Pearce is talking about. We are all categorized and classified as "wetbacks" because no one bothers to look at us - the Mexican Americans - separately.

Yes, deport all those who are illegal, we all lose in the long run; or leave them here and live with it. There is no immediate or simple answer, unless Pearce can convince his family to go pick tomatoes and work at McDonald's for $6 an hour.

Sincerely,
Louis Alanis
