Eclectic LA singer makes stop in Goodyear
Singer/songwriter Perla Batalla will be performing in the West Valley as part of her current tour
She's sung Gershwin to Gypsy Kings, folk melodies to bluesy ballads and now singer/songwriter Perla Batalla will be performing in the West Valley as part of her current tour.
Batalla, a native of Los Angeles, sang backup vocals for the late Leonard Cohen and has performed with the Gypsy Kings, Was (Not Was), Iggy Pop and k.d. lang, among others.
Growing up, Batalla heard a diverse array of singers such as Javier Solis and Lucha Reyes along with Muddy Waters and John Coltrane in her parents' Spanish-language record store. No doubt she'll be paying tribute to her Mexican heritage, as she always sings a few songs from that genre in every concert. Her most recent CD, Discoteca Batalla features such cuts as La Llorona, Mexico de Mi Alma, Las Mañanitas and La Paloma. (To hear some of Batalla's songs, visit www.perla.com.)
The concert, presented Jan. 27 by the West Valley Arts Council, begins at 8 p.m. at PebbleCreek Renaissance Theatre, 16222 W. Clubhouse Drive, Goodyear. Tickets are $20 adults, $8 students. For more info: visit www.westvalleyarts.org or call (623) 935-6384.
