Language battle of the networks

Even “Ugly Betty” (the one who doesn’t speak Spanish) couldn’t save the major English-language television networks in the United States during the November Sweep. Instead, Univisión Television Network reported its best November Sweep ever as it saw a 14 percent growth in viewers ages 18 to 49 viewers and a 12 percent increase among adults 18 to 34.

According to Nielsen Television Index, Univisión maintained its position as the fifth largest broadcast network in primetime among key demographics. During the same period, only FOX saw an increase in viewers while ABC, CBS, NBC, and CW saw declines when compared with last year.

Phoenix viewers contributed to the success, according to the results. Early local news at affiliate KTVW-33 enjoyed viewership increases year-to-year. Among households in Phoenix, there was a 10 percent jump.

The network beat ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX on 16 of 27 nights among adults ages 18 to 34 and five of 27 nights among adults ages adults 18 to 49. Univisión was also No. 1 in primetime among adults ages 18 to 34 on five nights during the November 2007 Sweep.
