Get swept off your feet

Bar Smith, a local bar and restaurant, continues to host a Capoeira night featuring Capoeira Brasil. The instructor is Angelique Marquand (Borboleta is her Capoeira name, which translates from Brazilian Portuguese as “butterfly”). She currently teaches Capoeira as part of world dance at Scottsdale Community College.

Capoeira is stunning display of dance that includes precise and even dangerous moves. This art form was practiced by communities of people enslaved in Brazil and other parts of South America prior to the 20th century. Capoeira allowed a way to keep art in the community as well as to teach defense. The dance involves two partners sparring with sweeps, kicks and other acrobatics while a circle of instruments and vocals provide a rhythm. Join Capoeira Brasil at Bar Smith Feb. 16.
