A Latino by any other name

What’s in a name? In Arizona, it’s most definitely a Latino influence.

For the third consecutive year, Angel was the No. 1 choice for newborn boys in 2007, according to a survey by the Arizona Department of Health Services. Other names with that can be traced to Hispanics were Jose (No. 2), Luis (No. 7) and Jesus (No. 13).

The same four names were among the top eight names in 2006. That year, however, Jesus edged out No. 8 Luis. They were joined by Juan (No. 20).

Among girls, Isabella was the most popular name among newborns in Arizona and Mia was No. 3 in 2007, according to the Department of Health Services. The names again were tops in 2006, except they swapped places that year.
