Hospital expansion to add 800 beds for kids

Phoenix Children's Hospital announced major expansion

Phoenix Children's Hospital recently announced a major expansion over the next two decades to keep abreast of the Valley's pediatric population growth (projected to reach 1.5 million) through the year 2030.

The hospital's strategic planning showed the Valley will need 800 more pediatric beds - and Phoenix Children's Hospital will need 200 more pediatric sub-specialists - by 2030.

The expansion will go through several phases:

The addition of a new patient tower at the Thomas Road campus, providing private rooms for families and patients.

A new nine-story Ambulatory tower, including a parking garage, west of the hospital's Human Resources building. A separate Ambulatory/Urgent Care center will be located off U.S. 60 in Mesa, at Higley Road and Southern Avenue.

Another patient tower where the Administration and Human Resources buildings now stand, plus a remodeling of the existing patient tower.

A facelift for the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, enlarging its nursery to four times its current size and offering 76 private patient rooms.

A new Ronald McDonald House, to be built on land donated by the hospital, adjacent to the Thomas Road campus. The house will offer 16 apartment-style rooms for families whose children are patients at the hospital.

Improvements in parking facilities and a new conference center are planned.
