UA makes debt-free promise

The University of Arizona is making the dream of a college education come true for hundreds of Arizona freshmen who may have considered college beyond their financial reach.

Under UA’s new program, dubbed the Arizona Assurance, students from Arizona families earning annual incomes of $42,400 or less now have the opportunity to graduate in four years, debt-free.

The first class of Arizona Assurance scholars, approximately 600 strong, will arrive on campus in August.

By combining federal and state financial aid, privately funded grants and work-study, the Arizona Assurance covers all of the essential costs of attending UA, including tuition and fees, books, room and food.

An incoming freshman must be an Arizona resident, qualify for admission, have applied for financial aid no later than May 1, enter the university directly from high school, be eligible for the federal Pell Grant and be a full-time student. He or she must agree to work 10-15 hours per week in a federal work-study job.
